Moving from principles to action for energy supply that mitigates against climate change requires a long-term perspective. Energy infrastructure takes time to build up; new energy technologies take time to develop. Policy shifts often also need many years to take effect. In most world regions the transformation from fossil to renewable energies will require additional investment and higher supply costs over about twenty years

5.6 transport

Despite the fast growth of the transportation sector, energy consumption can be limited to current levels in the Energy [R]evolution scenario.

Dependence on fossil fuels, which today are responsible for 80% of this supply, should decrease, with renewable energy sources supplying 29% in 2030 and 40% in 2050.The share of electricity in the transportation sector will rise to 7% by 2050.

Measures for vehicle efficiency will also influence the sector. A transition to the use of smaller cars in addition to increased fuel economy will result in significant energy savings.

But the scenario also projects the need to accelerate the transition from passenger cars to buses, trains and subways in urban areas.
